Hospice vs. Palliative Care

Understanding Hospice & Palliative Care

At High Desert Hospice, we’re often asked, “Aren’t hospice and palliative care the same thing?” It’s a common question, and we’re here to help clarify. While both types of care focus on comfort and improving quality of life, they support patients at different stages of a serious illness. Understanding the distinction can help ensure that individuals and their families receive the right care at the right time, tailored to their needs and goals.

What Is Palliative Care?

Palliative care is specialized medical care designed to relieve the symptoms, pain, and stress associated with serious illnesses—regardless of the stage of diagnosis. Unlike hospice care, palliative care can be provided alongside curative treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, dialysis, or surgery. Its primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for both patients and their families.

This type of care benefits individuals facing chronic or life-limiting conditions like cancer, heart failure, COPD, and kidney disease. It addresses not only physical discomfort but also emotional and psychological needs. Palliative care offers an added layer of support that works in tandem with a patient’s existing treatment plan. It’s not about ending treatment—it’s about improving everyday life through comfort, clarity, and compassionate care.

What Is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is a type of palliative care designed for patients who are no longer pursuing curative treatment and are believed to have a life expectancy of six months or less, as determined by a physician. At this stage, the focus shifts entirely from treating the illness to enhancing comfort, preserving dignity, and supporting emotional and spiritual well-being.

Instead of continuing aggressive medical interventions, hospice care provides compassionate, patient-centered support that allows individuals to spend their remaining time in comfort—often in the setting of their choice. Care can be provided at home, in a hospice facility, or within a hospital or long-term care center.

Hospice services typically include 24/7 access to medical and nursing care, expert pain and symptom management, emotional and spiritual counseling, caregiver education and assistance, as well as grief and bereavement support for families. More than medical care, hospice is about creating space for peace, connection, and quality of life during life’s final chapter—surrounded by the people who matter most.
